The Dragon Boat Festival, on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month every year,
commemorates the death of Qu Yuan. On hearing that the Qin State had conquered the capital of the Chu state, Qu, who had served as an advisor to the king, drowned himself in the river. To scare away fish from eating his body, the locals hit the water with their rowing boat paddles, beat drums and threw rice dumplings into the water.
The rowing boats have become dragon boats and teams of paddlers, train year-round in their long and narrow boats to compete in races. The dragon boats are decorated with dragon heads, tails and scales printed on the hull. If you are interested in this sport, join the Institute's DBIG, and share the joyful time during regular practices and races.
