Over 1,000 sports enthusiasts from the accounting profession take part in CPA Sports Carnival 2025 co-organized by HKICPA and SCAACPA

17 May 2025

Co-organized by the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA) and the Society of Chinese Accountants and Auditors (SCAACPA), the CPA Sports Carnival 2025 was successfully held today (17 May) at the Hammer Hill Road Sports Ground in Diamond Hill. This flagship annual event of the accounting profession attracted over 1,000 sports enthusiasts from more than 40 accounting organizations, joined by their friends and family, showcasing the vibrant spirit of the profession.

Hong Kong’s accounting profession is a cornerstone of the city's status as an international business hub. Accounting practitioners play a vital role across industries, driving economic prosperity, promoting sustainable development, and reinforcing Hong Kong’s position as an international financial center. With the theme “Shared Success, Vibrant CPA” (共享共贏.活力CPA), the CPA Sports Carnival 2025 provided a welcome respite for practitioners to recharge, rejuvenate physically and mentally, and expand their professional networks.

Christopher Hui, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, Director Hu Zhong-yong and Deputy Director Li Xu-hong of the Department of Administration and Finance of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, Prof. Nelson Lam, Director of Audit, Dr. David Sun, Chairman of the Accounting and Financial Reporting Council, Dr. Kelvin Wong, Chairman of the Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong, Hon. Edmund Wong, Legislative Council member (Accountancy) and Tong Wai Lun, Vice-President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China and Chairman of the Hong Kong Badminton Association Ltd, were Guests of Honour of CPA Sports Carnival 2025, and cheered on the athletes participating in the competitions.

In his opening speech, Secretary Hui said “Today's sports carnival showcased the unity and vitality of the accounting profession, reflecting the industry's spirit of striving for excellence and surpassing itself — a key driving force behind the high-quality development of Hong Kong’s accounting sector,” said Mr. Hui. “The HKSAR Government has been actively promoting the sustained development of the accounting industry. For example, the Hong Kong Sustainability Disclosure Standards will officially take effect on August 1 this year, reinforcing Hong Kong’s position as an international green finance hub and opening up a new track for the accounting profession in ‘sustainability disclosure and assurance’. In addition, since March this year, the accounting profession has been included in the Talent List, helping to attract international talent to develop their careers in Hong Kong. I hope members of the accounting profession will continue to carry forward the perseverance and team spirit demonstrated on the sports field, and work together to build an even brighter future for the accounting sector.”

Edward Au, President of HKICPA, one of the event’s co-organizers, stated in his opening speech, “The HKICPA is committed to advancing the sustainable development of the accounting profession.

By organizing diverse recreational and sporting activities, we strive to support our members’ physical and mental well-being, empowering them to contribute to Hong Kong’s robust economic growth. The CPA Sports Carnival provides an ideal platform for accounting practitioners to take a brief respite from busy office work, come together through sports, and demonstrate the vibrant spirit of the profession.”

Canvas Lam, President of SCAACPA, also a co-organizer of the event, said, “Sports can be a knowledge, a hobby, a persistence in self-improvement, and a bridge that connects people and facilitates interaction. This year the CPA Sports Carnival has been held for the third time to continue to provide a platform for accounting practitioners to get together for fun and wellness, and to mingle with friends from the industry.  With the theme ‘Shared Success, Vibrant CPA’, we hope everyone who joined this event would enjoy the happiness of playing sports together for fun and wellness, and for bonding and friendship.”

Apart from track and field events, this year’s sports carnival also featured team competitions, such as a tug-of-war tournament and plank endurance challenges, fostering camaraderie and friendly competition among accounting organizations. Attendees also enjoyed interactive fitness game booths, making it a fun and relaxing weekend for participating accountants and their friends and family.

Inaugurated in 2023, the CPA Sports Carnival is the profession’s largest sports and recreational event. Sports enthusiasts from the accounting profession participated wholeheartedly, showcasing their athletic abilities and striving for excellence on behalf of their respective organizations, embodying the spirit of sportsmanship.

As the statutory organization responsible for developing the accounting profession, the HKICPA will continue to provide various services for members to safeguard the accounting practitioners’ health of body and mind, and be dedicated to contributing and solidifying Hong Kong’s status as an international financial centre.
