Workshops
The new QP will put more emphasis on ethical training by designing learning and development activities in the workshops, in particular, the Capstone workshops to raise students' ethical capabilities. The focus of the ethical training is on identifying ethical dilemmas, understanding their implications and developing professional solutions.
Employers are looking for professional accountants who possess higher-order skills such as critical thinking, professional scepticism and business acumen. The Capstone is designed to develop the higher-order skills so that students can think laterally to identify complex problems and develop multifaceted solutions which are vital to succeed in a career as a professional accountant. Such skills can be trained effectively after students have acquired knowledge from all technical modules including workshops.
Q2. | Is there any difference in the structure of the module workshops under the new QP as compared with the current QP? |
The workshops in the new QP will be configured into a format of 8 workshops, one at the introduction to the Professional Level, one for each Professional Module and three for the Capstone.
No change in the total number of workshop days.
Current QP: 2-day workshops for each of the four modules.
New QP: 1-day for introductory workshop, 1-day workshop for each Professional Module, and 3-day workshops for the Capstone.
Q6. | What are the requirements to complete the workshops? Is there aggregate mark policy for workshops and examination in the Professional Level and the Capstone under the new QP? |
For the Professional Level, no aggregate mark policy applies for workshops and examinations. Workshop and examination for each module are separately assessed.
For the Capstone Level, aggregate mark policy applies for workshops and the Final Examination. Students are required to meet the overall assessment of the three full-day workshops and the Final Examination.
The introductory workshop is to ensure all students to have a basic level of competence for the core enabling competences and the awareness of ethics. In addition, it ensures students to have a thorough understanding on the Professional Level and the Capstone. Students are required to take this workshop before enrolling in the technical modules in the Professional Level.
Upon completion of the Associate Level and for those students with degree qualification who have been granted exemption for 8 or more modules in the Associate Level whereby they can do cross-level examination enrollment to the Professional Level.
No, but students are required to complete the introductory workshop before they can enroll in the technical modules of the Professional Level.
Q11. | If I did not complete the Introductory Workshop, can I join the professional module examination as completion of workshop is only a preferred sequence? |
No, preferred sequence only applies to the professional modules and students are required to complete the Introductory Workshop before they can join the Professional Modules of the Professional Level.
Completion of the Introductory Workshop is a pre-requisite to start the Professional Modules. However, students are allowed to enrol for the Introductory Workshop together with Professional Modules in the same session. In case students cannot complete the Introductory Workshop, the enrolled Professional Modules will be withdrawn automatically with refund after deducing the HK$500 administration fee for each enrolled module item.
The objectives of workshops in the four Professional Modules are:
(a) Develop candidates' skills to research, solve and analyze problems; apply technical knowledge in practical scenarios;
learn from the experiences of their peers and workshop facilitators; gain a better understanding and further insight of
learning materials through discussion in workshops;
(b) Provide the opportunity for students to develop the core enabling competences; and
(c) Assist students to get prepared for the module examinations.
Each modules has a full-day workshop supplemented with interactive online materials. The workshops will include simulations, case studies and performance tasks.
After the completion of the introductory workshop, students are eligible to enroll in the technical modules and attend the module workshops. However, students are allowed to enrol for the Introductory Workshop together with Professional Modules in the same session. In case students cannot complete the Introductory Workshop, the enrolled Professional Modules will be withdrawn automatically with refund.
The Professional Modules under the new QP will be offered concurrently in two sessions, with examinations held in June and December of each year, starting from December 2020. The detailed schedule for each session will be announced in due course.
Yes, however, completion of the workshop before sitting the relevant module examination is a preferred sequence.
Q20. | If I am absent from the Professional Workshop, can I sit the corresponding Professional module examination? |
Yes, workshop is not a pre-requisite to sitting the module examination at the Professional level but completion of the workshop before sitting the relevant module examination is a preferred sequence.
Students can apply for change of workshop and the institute will assess the circumstance on a case-by-case basis. Details will be announced in the Student Handbook.
Students can select and take the four modules in any order. However, a maximum of two modules can be taken in the first attempt with no restriction on the number of module enrolments for re-sit.
The Institute sees the importance of providing greater flexibility to QP students for their career.
There is no limitation on the number of attempts for Professional workshops.
Q24. | I am a QP student and have completed workshops under the current QP. Do I need to take workshops under the new QP? |
Under the cross-credit arrangement, the pass that students have obtained for a module under the current QP will be deemed to be a pass for the corresponding module of the new QP. QP students who have passed the technical workshops but not the examination of the remaining module(s) of the current QP will not be required to attend the workshop of the corresponding Professional Module(s) of the new QP.
The objectives of the Capstone workshopsare:
(a) Develop candidates' ability to integrate and apply knowledge and skills from the technical modules and practical
experience;
(b) Further develop the enabling competences; and
(c)Develop and assess higher-order enabling skills such as problem solving, critical and lateral thinking to enhance
students' ability to identify complex problems including aspects of ethical dilemma and to develop professional
solutions.
The Capstone comprises 3 full-day workshops supplemented with interactive online materials and a Final Examination. The workshops will include simulations, case studies and assessment tasks.Students are required to demonstrate their achievement of the prescribed learning outcomes and meet the assessment criteria of the workshops. Full attendance of the Capstone workshops is a prerequisite to sit the Final Examination.
The Capstone under the new QP will be offered concurrently in two sessions, with examinations held in June and December of each year, starting from June 2021. The detailed schedule for each session will be announced in due course.
The 3 full-day Capstone workshops will include simulations, case studies and assessment tasks, which require students to think laterally to identify complex problems and develop multifaceted solutions. There will also be added emphasis on ethical training to enhance the higher-skill training of the students.
Students will be allowed to sit the Final Examination while their scores in the assessment tasks of the Capstone workshops will be included in the overall results of the Capstone.
Q34. | Why would students need to retake the Capstone workshop if they fail the Capstone under the new QP? |
The Capstone is integrated and comprised of three full-day workshops and the Final Examination. Students are required to complete the assessment tasks across the Capstone and meet the overall assessment in order to complete the Capstone. Completion of the Capstone provides a formal verification that students can demonstrate a required competent-practitioner level of performance. Students who fail to achieve the overall assessment will therefore be required to retake the Capstone, i.e. both the Workshops and the Final Examination.
